About the role
The Temporary Animal Caretaker works in the Pasture Department of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, supporting the Manager of Animal Care and Pasture Assistants. The position involves extensive outdoor work, animal handling, and routine farm maintenance.
Key responsibilities
- Observe and record animal health, count livestock daily, and ensure proper confinement in paddocks.
- Assist with animal examinations, treatments, medication administration, and emergency response.
- Collect, restrain, transport, and supervise animals for teaching and care activities.
- Maintain water supply, clean pens, stalls, and feeding areas, and manage forage grass and grain distribution.
- Repair fences, gates, and electric fencing; perform pest control and brush management.
- Operate Pasture trucks or utility vehicles once licensed, and assist with fire and hurricane emergency protocols.
Required profile
- Ability to lift 50‑70 pounds and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Comfortable standing for long periods and working directly with large and small livestock (cattle, sheep, donkeys, dogs, etc.).
- Willingness to work weekends and public holidays.
- Valid driver’s license in St. Kitts; Class D tractor driver’s license preferred.
- Experience using MS Outlook and pasture work scheduling software is advantageous.
