Pasture Assistant II (Animal Caretaker)

About the role

Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM), based on St. Kitts and advertised through its parent company Covista, is looking for a Pasture Assistant II. The job is described as very physical, involving long hours of work in the sun, and requires a valid driver's licence. The position involves caring for livestock and maintaining pasture facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Cut, load, deliver, unload, chop and receive forage grass for Ross University livestock
• Drive the pasture truck when licensed and insurable
• Plant and establish forage grasses, including supplying, weeding and fertilizing
• Clean animal stalls, pens and paddocks daily and periodically
• Maintain mangers, gates, feeders and buildings in the pasture
• Install, maintain and repair woven wire, high-tensile and barbed wire fencing
• Install, maintain, repair and operate irrigation systems
• Help animal caretakers with animal handling and transport, wash the transport vehicle after each trip, and assist Pasture Assistant I and Large Animal Caretakers
• Control brush in and around the pasture, set up and maintain electric fences, and care for the pasture truck, utility vehicle and trailers
• Be available as relief for large animal caretakers and trained for fire emergencies and hurricane crises
• Complete other duties as assigned and comply with all policies and standards

Required profile

• Valid Class P driver's licence (standard driver's licence qualification required)
• Class D tractor driver's licence is desirable
• Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
• Experience working with animals preferred
• Good communication skills, ability to work independently, and ability to prioritize and work under pressure
